JPS Football Media Day

On August 14th, the Jackson Public School Athletics department hosted football media day.  All six high schools were represented by their head coach with a few key players selected by their coach.  Murrah High School and Lanier High School finished last season (9-2) and (8-3) respectively.

Lanier High School was able to advance to the second round of the playoffs before losing a close game to Forest High School, 23 to 20.  Lanier Head Coach, Tommy Kelly, former NFL player, spoke about the growth of his team from last season.  Kelly talked about the importance of the offseason program, with many of his linemen joining the powerlifting team and making it to the state finals.  Key skill players ran track and placed in the state track meet last year.

Murrah High School enjoyed the experience of 26 seniors last season.  Head Coach Marcus Gibson stressed the importance of running a transformative program at Murrah.  The Mustangs are looking to win in every practice, every game, and in life.  Coach Gibson, along with his staff, are pouring into the young men to help them become the best young men, fathers, and brothers that they can in life.  Establishing standards within them that will last them long after their playing days.

Jim Hill High School will be under the guidance of Zack Grady.  Coach Grady is in his first year as the head coach at Jim Hill. Coach Grady brings head coaching experience and success with him to Jim Hill.  Laying the framework for building a good program is what the Tigers are doing now.  Grady stated he wants to have to do interviews in October.  Interviews in October indicate the season is going well.

Forest Hill High School is in their third year with Head Coach Tony Fell.  Coach Fell is excited to a have an experienced group of juniors this year.  The Patriots have been working hard in the offseason, having good practices, 7 on 7 opportunities, and being committed.

Two months ago, Callaway High School hired Montra Edwards to lead the Chargers football program.  Coach Edwards thanked his principal along with the Jackson Public Schools Athletic Department for making the transition into his role smooth.  The strength of the Chargers will be the offensive line this season.  3 starters return, and a transfer from Hartfield Academy will make Callaway formidable upfront.  Bigger.  Stronger.  Faster is goal.

Former Jackson State University standout and SWAC Defensive Player of the Year, Marcellus Speaks, returns to Provine High School as the head coach.   Coach Speaks is looking forward to see how the team handles adversity this season.  He feels the team is starting to gel and wants his guys to “finish”, play the next down, keep going.

JPS fans should expect a good football season this year from their schools.  Even those that are building, will surprise some people.
