Germantown wins first state championship

Germantown High School claimed the Class 7A boys basketball championship Thursday night, rolling past Madison Central 69-52 in the title game at the Mississippi Coliseum.

The Mavericks set the tone early, jumping out to a 20-12 lead after the opening quarter and taking a 29-21 advantage into halftime. A dominant third quarter put the game out of reach, as Germantown outscored the Jaguars 23-14 to build a 24-point cushion in the fourth before cruising to victory.

Senior guard Michael Williams led the way with a game-high 22 points, knocking down three three-pointers and going a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. His twin brother, Mason Williams, added 16 points and six rebounds, while Samuel Funches IV delivered 16 points and seven boards in the paint. As a team, Germantown shot an efficient 53.1 percent from the field and scored 34 points inside.

Madison Central kept pace early behind sharpshooter Maddox Singletary, who finished with 13 points and hit all three of his shots from beyond the arc. Kody Smith nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds, while Jeffrey Flanagan chipped in nine points. The Jaguars shot 46.3 percent overall and connected on eight threes.

The game featured just one tie and four lead changes, with Madison Central’s largest lead coming at 2-0 in the first quarter. Germantown, however, steadily built its advantage and never looked back, securing the program’s first-ever Class 7A championship.
