A difficult decision has been made for one Mississippi high school football program.
Thrasher Attendance Center in Booneville will pause both its middle school and high school football programs for the 2026 season because of declining participation numbers and player-safety concerns.
School leaders said roster sizes had continued to shrink over recent seasons, making it harder for the Rebels to compete and creating concerns about asking a limited group of players to handle every snap against full opponents.
The decision is a reminder that high school football is about more than Friday night results. It is about student safety, opportunity, school pride, and giving young athletes the support they need to compete the right way.
For Thrasher, the hope is that this is only a pause.
The school plans to work toward rebuilding participation and bringing football back to Willie T. Jackson Stadium at F.C. Dick Lowrey Field in the future. Until then, the focus will be on supporting the student-athletes, coaches, families, and community members who have represented Rebel football.
