FINALLY! It is that time again in Mississippi. The helmets are coming out. The cleats are hitting the grass. The whistles are blowing. And just like that, high school football is back.
According to the MHSAA calendar, football practice officially begins Monday, August 3, for both 1A-4A and 5A-7A programs across the state. That means from the Delta to the Coast, from small towns to big schools, teams are stepping back on the field with a fresh start and a whole lot to prove.
This is where it begins. Not under the lights. Not with packed bleachers. Not with the band playing, cheerleaders on the sideline and the student section going crazy. It starts in the heat. It starts with conditioning. It starts with coaches teaching, players learning and teams trying to figure out who they are before the first game ever gets here.
Who doesn’t love Friday nights? August practices are where football teams are built. This is where returning starters have to lead. This is where young players try to earn their spot. This is where coaches find out who can be trusted when the game gets tight and the fourth quarter starts feeling heavy.
Every team has a different story. Some are trying to defend a championship. Some are trying to get back to the playoffs. Some are replacing a senior class that carried the program. Some are simply trying to change the way people talk about them. But today, everybody gets a fresh start.
That is the beauty of a new football season. Right now, every locker room has hope. Every coach has a plan. Every player has a chance to earn respect and help his team become something special.
Of course, in Mississippi, the start of football practice also means dealing with the heat. And that part is serious. August football is not something to play with. Teams have to be smart. Coaches have to pay attention. Players have to hydrate, listen to their bodies and take care of each other.
Winning matters, but keeping players safe matters more.
The season will get here soon enough. The rivalries will return. The big plays will come. The upsets, heartbreaks and unforgettable moments will find their way back to Friday nights across Mississippi. But before all of that happens, the work has to start.
And today, it does.
Mississippi high school football is back. Now the road to Friday night begins.
